A smile makeover can drastically improve the way your teeth look. You might need a single or multiple treatments to restore the appearance of your smile, but the end results are always the same: You end up with teeth you can be proud of, especially when it is time to smile for pictures or interact with others.
Most common treatments performed during a smile makeover
There are a variety of dental treatments that can be used to restore a person's smile. The treatments a dentist decides to go with often depends on what the patient's budget allows for and the unique situation the patient is dealing with. Here are five treatments a dentist might perform during a smile makeover:
1. Teeth whitening
Here is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure by dentists. Teeth become darker and more yellow as a person ages, and they can also be stained by the foods and beverages being consumed. While there are over-the-counter bleaching agents that can be purchased in grocery stores, these are not anywhere as strong as the whitening agents dentists have access to.
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, a single whitening session performed by a dentist can make teeth appear 10 shades lighter.
2. Composite bonding
This is one of the most affordable treatments performed by cosmetic dentists. It can be used to address a wide range of issues like chipped teeth, stains, deformities and discoloration. During the procedure, the dentist applies a composite resin directly to the tooth. The composite is molded into the desired shape, then the dentist uses an ultraviolet light to harden it. Teeth that have been repaired with composite resin look no different than real teeth.
3. Veneers
Veneers can be used to treat a wide range of dental issues like misaligned, deformed, chipped, stained or discolored teeth. When it comes to treating stains and discoloration, veneers are typically reserved for patients whose teeth cannot be restored using whitening treatments.
A veneer is a thin shell that is bonded to the front of a tooth. It serves as a mask, hiding any imperfections on the tooth.
4. Crowns
Dental crowns are often used to address issues like badly damaged, chipped, broken, fractured, stained and discolored teeth. Also known as caps, these devices help patients restore the natural function of the damaged tooth, while simultaneously restoring its appearance.
Crowns are often made out of porcelain, ceramics, gold, silver and a range of metal alloys.
5. Braces
Braces are orthodontic devices that are used to deal with teeth alignment issues like overbites, misaligned teeth and protruding jaws. These devices are typically worn for a period of six months to a few years. There are a variety of braces like metal braces and clear braces, but they all work using the same concept: pushing the patient's teeth into proper alignment by constantly applying pressure.
