A visit to the emergency dentist is never something that people plan for or see themselves needing. The vast majority of people never even realize that such a thing, as an emergency dentist, even exists until they have a dental emergency. Unfortunately, many people have a sense of invulnerability when it comes to their teeth. The belief that taking care of teeth, engaging in good oral hygiene, and not taking unnecessary risks will save teeth is fairly common.  It often leads people to the belief that they will never need emergency care for their teeth. While it is true that your lifestyle directly impacts how healthy your teeth are, and therefore directly mitigates or encourages a potential of a trip to an emergency dentist, it is also true that there are things you can neither foresee nor control. These include things like accidents or disease that is inherent because of weak teeth or gums. The most important thing to remember when you have a situation that appears to be a dental emergency is to treat it as an emergency. Getting immediate medical attention by a trained dentist is the only way you can avoid the damage from spreading and becoming more intensive to fix and more expensive to treat.

Visiting our emergency dentist office is not the same as visiting an emergency room and getting some kind of dental care there. As a dentist, we can actually work to treat the root of the problem not just the surface where the symptoms are most apparent. Regrettably, because so many people do not know of an emergency dentist, and because emergency dental situations do arise quite frequently in modern life, more and more people are showing up at Emergency Rooms to get their teeth treated. According to the Federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, which collected emergency room data from 24 states between 2006 and 2009, the rate of people visiting the ER for a dental condition has increased by over 16%. Unfortunately, what tends to happen is that over 20% of the people that visit the ER with a dental problem end up having to go back with the same problem or needing to see a dentist anyway. This is not because the ER doctors are not trying their best but because they are not an emergency dentist. They can treat the pain with pain medication, and even stop bleeding from a lost tooth, but they do not have the training or the skills to treat underlying infections, gum diseases, or replace a knocked out tooth.

There are a number of reasons that drive people to seek out emergency dental care. Often times, and this is the most common reason, the trip to the emergency dentist starts with a simple tooth ache that gets out of control. Other times people will come in to get emergency dental services because they have knocked out a tooth or had a filling come loose and fall out. Chipped and cracked teeth can also lead you visiting us at the emergency dentist clinic. Regardless of the reason, we are available to help you outside of business hours so that you can get the care when you need it the most.
