All-on-4®: An Aftercare Guide

All On 4 Palm Desert, CA

All-on-4® provides a more stable and convenient option than traditional dentures. The latter is often recommended to those with missing teeth due to their affordability. A complete denture set can be cheaper than the cost of a single implant.

All-on-4 combines the affordability of dentures with the bone-preserving properties of implants to create a long-term solution for missing teeth. Dentures do not prevent bone tissue loss, and they are prone to shifting when worn, making it challenging to eat or speak with them. All-on-4 prosthetics are attached to implants, so they are almost as stable as real teeth.

Recovering after getting All-on-4

Getting All-on-4 involves getting at least four implants on each half of the patient’s jaw being fitted with the prosthesis. It is a surgical procedure that involves drilling holes into the patient’s jaw and inserting implants into the holes. Patients also get their artificial teeth attached to the implants at the end of the procedure.

The implants will fuse with bone tissues for the next six months via a process called osseointegration. Patients will need to be careful with their artificial teeth during this period to reduce the risk of complications. Here are simple things that patients can do to make the recovery process go smoother.

1. Get rest

Dentists generally recommend taking at least two days off work after getting All-on-4. The site of the surgery will be sore for the next few days, and the patient might need to manage the pain with prescription painkillers.

Getting rest during this period helps speed up the recovery process. Strenuous activities should be avoided while the patient heals. Most of the discomfort associated with the procedure should go away within about three to seven days.

2. Consume appropriate foods

Getting teeth attached to the implants during a single procedure does not mean the patient is free to eat whatever they like. It takes months for the implant to fuse with bone tissues, so it is possible to dislodge them when eating chewy or hard goods.

Dentists recommend consuming an all-liquid diet for the first few weeks after the treatments. Stick to smoothies, soups, and broths during this period to avoid chewing. After the third week, the patient can start incorporating soft foods like cooked vegetables and mashed potatoes. Patients can return to their regular diet once the dentist tells them that it is okay.

3. Take follow-up visits seriously

Patients are advised to show up for all follow-up visits scheduled by their dentist. It gives the oral professional a chance to monitor the integration of the implant with the jaw and to make any adjustments.
